Achieving great typography has never been more important. It is believed that great responsive web design relies on 99.9% typography and just 0.1% everything else.
This talk will explore how to embrace type theory from print design as well as look at how you can create great typography by using the latest techniques in modern responsive web design and implement these using Drupal.
I will look at the basics such as the differences between serif and sans serif typefaces and how to pair fonts before looking at how the web has evolved from the standard list of fonts we used ten years ago, to the modern world of Typekit and Google Fonts and how we can use these available typefaces with apps like Typecast. I will show code examples of how to asynchronously load fonts, build font stacks, create vertical rhythm, design a text hierarchy, use glyphs and hang punctuation. I will also suggest plugins that enable more control over headings, individual letters and widows, and show how you can introduce all of these technologies into Drupal and use the Typogrify module.
The aim of this talk is to understand the design basics from print design and see how they can be used in conjunction with our new web tools to solve the new design problems we face with web and responsive design.
