The GeoWorld in Drupal 8

Speakers:

By now most of us are aware of the wealth of new and exciting features that D8 will provide when it is released: amazing entity integration, new field types shipped with core and some other cool things that will make our lives easier.

However, what about Geo-specific functionality? These features have not been on the spotlight during Drupal 8's release cycle. At the same time, though, geodata is becoming increasingly more important given that the demand of location-aware applications is on the rise, driven by the possibilities afforded thanks to mobile devices.

Modern application needs will be way beyond the ability to display a few points on a map - we need geodata and functionality that will allows to render context-aware information and perform complex calculations. As pointed out by Dries' keynote in Austin, there's going to be a demand for having geographically aware information in Drupal, and yet there's not a great way to do that built into core.

Geofield module seems to be the best wide-range solution for working with geographic data that we have at the moment, and there's a lot of room for improvement. A port to Drupal 8 is on its way and this session will cover some of its most interesting features.

The current state of the art in the wider Drupal 8 geo world will be also reviewed so as what steps are needed to follow in order to get Drupal ready for the next generation of geo applications.

Attendees to this session will benefit from better understanding of will be possible with regards to geo functionality on Drupal 8 and what still needs to be worked on.
