Showcase: Natural History Museum

Speakers:

Lately we relaunched the website of Bonn's well-known Natural History Museum “Zoological Research Museum Alexander Koenig” (currently Beta, will be online in September).
Drupal replaced the former proprietary CMS.

Museums' websites are challenging in conceptual design and implementation.
This applies especially to research museums, as the website has to address very different target groups.
The scientific community expects different informations than the touristic crowd, families and school classes interested in the exhibitions.

Furthermore, such a website nowadays isn't a standalone app any more. It is integrated in a heterogenous infrastructure of other applications and content delivery software. Interfaces for data exchange with social media, mobile apps, booking systems, donation systems, administrative intranet software and exibits have to be provided.

My talk addresses best practices in processes and methods for handling these challenges.
I will dive deeply in how we built the site, which modules we used, what we wrote ourselves and where we nearly despaired of some Drupal shortcomings.
