Drupal for Good: NGO & Activist Stories, Tools & Collaboration

Drupal has its roots in small community organizations, work for social good, and aspirations for a better future, and those projects haven't gone away. NGOs have been leveraging Drupal since its early days. We believe their unique use case for Drupal deserves some attention.

Case studies

In this interactive session, we will reflect on successes and failures of how NGOs have leveraged Drupal, and talk about the challenges ahead. We will go over case studies from the monthly Drupal for Good discussion call. We'll talk about how building community around NGO/nonprofit/activist users of Drupal has been helpful, in person at events like the BADCamp and NYCCamp nonprofit summits and the Nonprofit Technology Conference's Drupal Day, and virtually through the phone calls, Twitter chats and Drupal for Activists, Organizers, and Social Change on g.d.o.

Tools

We will also discuss organizations leveraging NGO-oriented Drupal distros like Campaignion, OpenAid, OpenOutreach, AbleOrganizer, Engage and others. We'll talk about different techniques for engagement and advocacy using the Drupal platform, such as best practices for using the Webform module in petition sites.

Collaboration

We would like to identify key challenges facing NGOs today in terms of using Drupal, and discuss how we can work together to address these challenges. Instead of reinventing the wheel, we can leverage our strengths to address the challenges and opportunities ahead -- whether it's migrating to Drupal 8, adapting to mobile, training program staff or building better advocacy tools. Please come with questions and ideas on how to continue to build the Drupal for Good community throughout the world!
