Talking Drupal and Open Source with Governments

At the suggestion of Tim Deeson, my talk at the 2014 DrupalCamp London CxO was entitled "Selling the Benefits of Drupal, not the [insert swearword of your choice] Features". The talk went down very well – thank goodness, it was the first time I spoke about much of the material in public – and has continued to resonate with audiences elsewhere. It has also spawned a series of blog posts, open source sales training materials, and more.

Since then, I have had the pleasure and privilege to meet and speak with numerous people involved in both sides of the Government IT equation from around the world. The needs and priorities of these organisations are interestingly different to those of our better known friends and clients in "The Enterprise" and "The Digital Agency". While there are similar needs for innovation and agility, perspectives on timeframe, solution longevity, supplier relationships, and more make for a different mix. The cultural differences between people in government IT in Germany, Great Britain, The United States, and Australia are overshadowed for me by a bigger one of government or non-government.

Come along and let me tell you what I have learned so far. I'm hoping it could be useful for you, too!

My pontification will also be compared and contrasted to real world examples and projects, including a case study by Ivo "segments" Radulovski on the Copenhagen Municipality, which is replacing more than 1000 sites on 15+ technologies with Drupal.
